SCVH is home to one of the region’s only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units, providing expert care for the most fragile newborns—including those born as early as 23 weeks. A dedicated transport team ensures safe transfers from other hospitals to SCVH’s specialized care.
Through support from the Valley Health Foundation, SCVH offers essential services that enhance care for mothers and newborns:
- Child Life Specialists help children and families cope with hospitalization through play, education, and emotional support.
Music Therapists use music to ease stress, encourage development, and promote bonding in the NICU. - Patient Family Support Specialists—former NICU moms—provide peer support and guidance to families during their NICU journey.
This unique program helps ensure families thrive after leaving the NICU.

Compassionate and High Quality Care for Children and Their Families (Pediatrics)
- SCVH is home to the only Pediatric, Pediatric ICU, and Acute Pediatric Rehabilitation Units in San Jose and southern Santa Clara County.
- SCVH is home to the only American College of Surgeons/American Burn Association recognized Pediatric Burn Center in the Bay Area.
Mental & Behavioral Health Support for Mothers and Newborns
SCVH offers specialized programs to support the emotional well-being of mothers and families:
- NICU Family Wellness Program: Provides mental health screenings, therapy, wellness classes, and virtual services for families with infants in the NICU.
- Perinatal Substance Abuse Program (PSAP): Offers comprehensive outpatient treatment for pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders—supporting recovery, healthy babies, and long-term well-being.

Specialized Care for Expecting Mothers
SCVH hospitals provide comprehensive, high-quality care for all pregnancies, including specialized services for women with high-risk conditions.
- Personalized Pregnancy Support: Multidisciplinary teams offer screenings, counseling, and urgent care throughout pregnancy.
- Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM): Expert care for high-risk pregnancies, including support from doctors, nurses, dietitians, and social workers to manage health through diet, exercise, and education.
- High-Risk Pregnancy Program: Coordinated care for women with diabetes, high blood pressure, or other medical concerns—featuring advanced diagnostics, perinatologists, and a dedicated transport team for safe mother-baby transfers.
- State-of-the-Art Delivery: Equipped labor and delivery rooms with obstetric anesthesiologists and neonatologists, plus access to a Level III NICU and over 50 pediatric specialists, ensure newborns receive immediate expert care.

Innovative Support for Mothers & Newborns
SCVH’s BRIDGE Program (Babies Reaching Improved Development & Growth in Their Environment) offers compassionate, evidence-based care to help families transition from the NICU to home.
- Provides at-home support for NICU graduates and at-risk newborns for up to six months post-discharge
- Ensures a smooth handoff from hospital to the family’s medical home
- Offers family-centered, preventative care to promote healthy development
- Supplies and resources funded through special grants from the Valley Health Foundation
