At some point, nearly everyone in Santa Clara County will depend on the public healthcare system for emergency or trauma care, specialty treatment, or support during a disaster or crisis.
This health system—the largest of its kind in Northern California—depends on dedicated physicians, nurses, and staff who work tirelessly to keep all of us safe. And it depends on you.
When we were founded as a nonprofit entity in 1988 under the name Valley Medical Center Foundation (VMC Foundation), our mission was to ensure the strength of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the County's single public hospital at the time. Knowing that the most vulnerable members of our community relied on this public institution, our work was clear: keep the doors open to ensure access to the highest quality care for all who needed it. Care received at a public healthcare system should match the highest quality care available anywhere in the County.
In the years since, our County healthcare system has grown to include Regional Medical Center, O’Connor Hospital, St. Louise Regional Hospital, and 15 primary and specialty care health centers (and growing). One in four County residents uses this healthcare system. With support from a dedicated community of donors and champions, we expanded support into public health, behavioral health, custody health, and more. When COVID-19 hit, we pivoted our operations and partnered with the County of Santa Clara to become the community distribution point for personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency supplies for our entire County.
To better reflect the growth of our healthcare system and our work in the community, in 2023 we renamed our organization to Valley Health Foundation (VHF), and recently updated our mission to mobilize philanthropy and partnerships to strengthen and advocate for our County health system, enhancing the impact of care across our community. We're excited about this new era of growth and the opportunities ahead to partner with you to make a healthier future for all.
