Since 2010, Valley Health Foundation has supported the VHF Summer Softball League, a recreational, co-ed softball league open to all County of Santa Clara Health System staff. This year, the league was funded by SCVH Wellness and Experience Fund.
9 teams competed in this year's league, with staff from across departments and locations, including Emergency, Physical Therapy, EVS, Social Work, Trauma Unit, Facilities, Lab, Finance, and more. This year, teams also included staff from TSS, ESA, and EMS!
The league was started in direct response to a group of RNs who approached VHF wanting to restart the hospital league. Since then, it has been a great opportunity for staff to connect with their colleagues in an active and positive environment. VHF staff, including our President and Executive Director Michael Elliott, have also played in the league. The league was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and came back in full swing last year.
This is just one of the ways Valley Health Foundation supports employee wellness. VHF also supports Idol Hands Band, which comprises of County of Santa Clara Health System staff and performs at charitable events around the community, as well as other employee wellness efforts, from rock painting and succulent making events for staff to helping to revamp supportive spaces, such as the Lavender Rooms.
Here’s what a few individuals shared about being a part of the Summer Softball League:
”I have been involved with VMC softball since the very beginning... A weekend only tournament at Twin Creeks in the 1990s. I love it!”
- Marilyn Reiss-Carradero, MSN, RN, SICU
”Having the opportunity to play this year has been incredibly rewarding. It provided us with a wonderful platform not only to engage in some friendly competition but also to bond with our teammates and forge new connections with members of other teams and the HHS community we serve.”
- Peter Castelino, Senior Management Analyst, ESA
